Patios are an ode to warm summer weather and are a cherished part of Canadian summers. Patios and decks are a wonderful addition to any home, and are now being styled as a room in itself and extension of the home and people that live within it.
There are so many ways to turn your patio into a luxurious retreat or oasis that’s perfect for private relaxation or hosting friends and neighbours. With summer in full swing, there’s no better time to bring all of the latest patio trends to your home, especially if you feel your patio is looking a bit drab.
Here are four of our favourite patio decor ideas.
Rugs
Outdoor rugs are a wonderful way of creating the essence of professional decor to your patio. Rugs give a mirage of a complete room and create the illusion of space if you’re working with a smaller deck.
Lighter finishes for patio furniture is popular for 2016, so try an eye-catching rug that uses geometric patterns to add an interesting focal point. There are many rugs sold at major retailers specifically for patios, meaning they’re more weather resistant in contrast to an indoor rug.
Tip - If you’re working with a completely uncovered space, we recommend an alternative: painted flooring. These DIY painted ‘rugs’ look fabulous and are completely weather resistant! Complete with a durable lacquer, and these faux rugs will be both easy to clean and waterproof.
2. Light Fixtures
String lights are a classic element of patios, and with good reason - soft, warm lighting adds ambience to any space. For a rustic look, simple round bulbs strung along your canopy or raised deck rafters will give an easy, effective lighting solution.
For a more sophisticated look, hanging fixtures are making waves as a beautiful accent piece. Small chandelier inspired pieces not only add an upscale touch to any canopy, but are also incredibly easy to make. No need for delicate crystal or heavy wrought iron - you can make your own DIY chandelier using lightweight and inexpensive materials like holiday lights and a hula hoop.
Or, if you have a spare umbrella laying around, thread twinkling lights around the spokes to make an interesting piece. Another great bonus of this project is the ease of installation. Fasten a small screw hook to your canopy orrafters, and hang the umbrella by its handle.
Plants and Greenery
Beautiful floral arrangements are a must-have for any space. Most of these plants are easily transportable to outdoor planters. Additionally, there are many plants that can naturally repel pests, such as Citronella grass, Rosemary, Catnip and Marigolds. Incorporating these type of plants will help you enjoy your outdoor oasis bug-free.
Aside from classic flower beds, we love the look of vertical gardens that use succulents or herbs in interesting containers.
Similarly, smaller arrangements scattered around your deck can add beautiful and easy to care for accents. This centerpiece, for example, adds sophistication to any lounge area.
Because succulents and cacti are so easy to maintain, they often make functional decor pieces (like the centerpiece and the vertical holder seen above). They require very little watering, so all you'll need to do is find a container you love and place where desired!
Miniature rose bushes can add a more rustic-inspired look. Place these tiny potted plants off to the sides of steps (or otherwise low to the ground) around your deck and voila - rich decor pieces that are inexpensive and easy to create!
Privacy & Dividers
One of the easiest ways to create your own personal outdoor oasis is to section off certain areas for privacy. But a tall permanent fence may not always be the answer (especially if you have great neighbours!). Movable and attractive privacy walls are a perfect solution.
For a more streamlined look, reclaimed wood can make a stunning and easily removable wall. With a few decor additions like plants or artwork, this privacy wall can also double as a focal point.
Alternatively, a green wall simultaneously sections off your deck for privacy and adds a great deal of natural vibrancy to the space. Consider tall potted plants like the ones below, which give partial to complete privacy, and will act as wonderful decor pieces.
One last alternative is the classic canopy. Many homeowners are now drifting away from a full frame canopies and opting instead for a retractable curtain positioned across one wall. Use a simple adjustable rod with curtain fabric (easy to DIY) threaded across, and you’ll have an elegant private patio.
When we think of a patio as a separate room rather than a simple outdoor space, the patio decorating ideas are endless. We all know how short Ontario summers are, so why not maximize your time outside by creating a fully functional outdoor oasis?
We’d love to see how you’ve decorated your patio or deck, so send us your photos by email, or share with us on our Facebook page!
