Do you know how to hang curtains?

Surprisingly curtains bring forth a lot of confusion for many people and many questions. Curtains are are one of most searched terms online when it comes to design.

When hung correctly, curtains have the potential to impact a room through texture, size and colour. Curtains give the illusion of height and make windows appear wider, as well as allowing you to control how much or how little light you allow into your space. They also increase your privacy.

You do not have to be an expert on design in order to hang curtains. Check out these tips to get you started in the right direction.

Experts say that curtains should be hung ½ an inch above the floor in order to avoid collecting dust. This also draws the eyes upwards, creating the illusion of a bigger space. If the fabrics are heavier, it is best to add ¼ - ½ an inch extra, as heavier fabrics stretch over time.

Tip: The width of your curtains should be at least two times wider than the area you are covering to allow yourself room to close them appropriately.

Step 2: Curtain Rods

Curtain rods are an essential aspect of hanging curtains. Research show that curtain rods actually make a room look larger.

Ensure your curtain rod is perfectly straight and is wider than your window, as this will allow enough room for your windows to be completely covered. A wider curtain rod also tricks your eyes into thinking the window is much larger than it truly is.

When choosing the correct rod, it is important to note how heavy the fabric is, as some fabrics will be more likely to weigh it down.

Tip: It’s best to buy a curtain rod that is 8”-12” wider than your window.

Step 3: Fabric Selection

Choosing the correct fabric involves choosing a fabric that suits the needs and mood of the room, as well as your own decorative taste.

For example, if you know that your bedroom allows in a lot of light, you might want to opt for a heavier fabric to block out the light to make it easier to sleep a bit longer in the morning. Dense fabric also adds a luxurious, elegant essence to the space, while increasing the amount of privacy. Light fabrics are best when trying to incorporate a light, breezy atmosphere in the room.

Tip: Accessorizing your curtains by using decorative rods, holdbacks and ties is an easy way for to add style to a room or go for a minimalist approach. Accessories also allow you to alter the look of your curtains while on a budget.
