When decorating a wall, we often think of hanging artwork or framed photos to add a focal point to the room. While these are certainly beautiful decor pieces, mirrors are a beneficial means of adding depth to small spaces and beauty to larger spaces.
Mirrors are often added as decor pieces to hallways, living rooms, dining rooms and more to take up space on an otherwise bare wall. When done correctly, mirrors not only act as an interesting decor piece, but can serve to amplify light, minimize clutter and make your space appear larger. Here are some tips to use a mirror effectively in a space.
Location, Location, Location
The key to using a mirror effectively is to determine the location and the placement, as you will want to create desirable reflections. A tip is to imagine your mirror acting as a window. This typically means that you’ll need a decently large wall space to work with. When you’re planning where to place a mirror, we suggest taking a look at the room and determining which wall could be opened to create a more open concept feel. A trick we like to incorporate involves placing the mirror on a wall opposite of any existing windows. This will create the illusion of another room, and adds so much dimension and light to the space.
Full length mirrors can create a dramatic impact in a small or large space, and can even become a focal point in a room. If you’re tight for space, you can place it behind desks and other objects to save space and make the room appear larger.
Use Light To Your Advantage
Mirrors work especially well when placed in a room with lots of natural light. If you’re looking to create the illusion of space in a room that lacks windows, such as a basement, then it’s best to place lighting elements close to the mirror, where they can catch the light and reflect it. This can be as simple as having a few overhead lighting fixtures (which are most likely already in place), or adding a lamp to a side table.
If you’re using a mirror specifically to brighten the room, feel free to stray from the conventional rectangular or oval shape! Use multiple mirrors of uniform or varying shapes to create a gallery wall feel, or look for interesting frames and overlays to create a decor piece. You can place a mirror behind a light source in order to maximize the light’s reach in a room.
If you are placing mirrors in a room that lacks natural light, you can use mirrors to your advantage by placing candles in front of mirrors to reflect the light, creating a romantic, relaxing atmosphere.
Use Mirrors Uniquely In Each Room
Mirrors are wonderful because there are so many ways you can use them uniquely in each room of your home. Some tips are:

Mirrored cabinets in the kitchen to make the space appear larger. It also looks lovely when it’s accompanied by granite countertops and grey backsplash.

Mirrors can add a decorative flair to your home, as there are various sizes and styles available. There are really no rules when it comes to mirrors in terms of placement or how many you should have in a home, but one of the best places for mirrors is the entryway. Entryways usually lack natural lighting, leaving an opportunity for creative lighting or decorative pieces. It’s also good to have if you want to check your appearance before leaving the house!
