Summer is officially in full swing! After the long, cold winter we’ve had, summer is a welcome change.
Canadian summers are all about being outside: at the cottage, BBQing, lounging at the pool, or reading a book on your patio. Often, a lot of people struggle with making the most out of their backyard if they are restricted by size.
Whether you have a spacious backyard or a small one, we think you can make the most of whatever space you have!
Break The Space Into Multiple Rooms Or Zones
Even if you have a smaller backyard, you can still create a multifunctional space by arranging the furniture strategically to establish different “rooms,” such as lounging, dining, mingling and cooking.
Breaking up the space into different “rooms” makes the space appear larger, while ensuring you are getting the most out of your space!
Extend Your Indoor Space
Think about what spaces in your home you wish were bigger: do you wish your living room was bigger, or do you wish you had more room for a dining area? Establishing which indoor rooms are lacking space is beneficial when deciding what you want to do with your outdoor space. These days with the increase of technology, it is possible to extend any living space outdoors, even if you wanted to shower outdoors (although, we recommend installing some barriers or something, especially if you have nosy neighbours!).
Create A Focal Point
Creating a focal point is important for any space, as it draws attention to a specific area of the room of your choosing. Creating a focal point is especially beneficial in a smaller space because it makes you forget that the space is small. You can use a variety of pieces as a focal point, such as water units, plants, art or sculptures. This all helps draw the eye to the center of the space.
Avoid Clutter, Include Contrast
The more your yard has in it, the smaller and overcrowded it will feel. Avoid littering your yard with a variety of accessories. Rather, try to include built-in seating (which hopefully has storage options), clean lines and avoid bulky furniture that takes up too much space. If you have plants or shrubbery in your yard, ensure you keep it under control, otherwise it makes the yard look a lot smaller. Remember that your patio is a prime example of ‘less is more’. Rather than having twenty small flower pots, opt for having four or five bigger plants to create a sharp look.
To enhance the look of your space, contrasting shapes and colours makes a space more interesting, such as having a mixture of round and square potted plants. Don’t feel pressured to have a lot of plants in your yard, either. It’s all about creating a space that works for you!
And, of course, always be sure to give your backyard personality! Character in a small space stands out more than its size. Make the space unique to you!
