7 Secrets of Low-Maintenance Landscaping

The following blog article: 7 Secrets of Low-Maintenance Landscaping was republished from http://www.devonleighhomes.com/about/blog/

Most people would rather be relaxing in the summer than be labouring to care for the lawn and garden. This month we’re revealing the secrets to how you can spend less time taking care of your yard and more time enjoying it!

1. Less is More

Yes, this often-used cliché also applies to your lawn. It’s simple - less lawn equals less work. That’s the best argument for using pavers (also known as “steppers”), brick, or decorative stone. Regardless of the option you choose, you’ll have a durable surface that eliminates the need for weeding or watering.

2. Perennials: the Gift that Keeps on Giving

Perennials come back season after season, unlike annuals, which you have to plant every year. Perennials come in many varieties, from drought-tolerant to those that grow well in rocky spaces. Be sure to do your research first and find the best low maintenance perennials for your region.

3. Clear a Path

Overgrown pathways or steps make a yard appear careless and messy. The solution? Replace stepping stones with concrete squares or flagstone laid in concrete to avoid weeds and grass growing between steps or on the path. Laying a border on either side of a path and filling it with gravel is a simple way to create definition and clean lines. Before putting down gravel it’s a good idea to add an underlayer of mesh or something similar to help keep weeds out of pathways and patios.

4. Invest in Mulch

This year, try adding mulch to your garden. Mulch breaks down, fertilizes your plants, and best of all prevents weeds. It's relatively inexpensive and you only have to replace it in the spring.

5. Don’t Forget About Potted Plants

Potted plants not only add to a low-maintenance yard, but they are also an easy way to add different pops of colour around the area. Since the plants are in pots they’re easy to move, giving you the freedom to switch things up by moving plants to different spots around the yard.

6. It’s Never Been Easier to Be (Ever)Green

Shrubs and trees can combine for a striking appeal to front or back yard landscaping. While evergreens can be expensive they are well worth the investment. With evergreens, your home can look beautiful year round.

7. Faux Grass

Artificial grass sure has come a long way. Available in varying heights and shades, artificial grass no longer makes your lawn look like a mini-golf course. The only downside is the price averages $8 to $12 per square foot – but this price tag provides you with a lawn that is 100% fuss-free. It doesn’t need to be cut, watered or fertilized and pets can’t harm it.
