Flooring Options for Every Room of Your Home

The post: Flooring Options for Every Room of Your Home was available on devonleighhomes.com/about/blog

With so many flooring products out there, how do you choose the right one? Since every room is unique, there is no one size fits all solution. Our guide will help you explore the best options for kitchen, living, bath, laundry and bedroom areas.

Kitchen Flooring Options

Priorities: Waterproof, durable, easy to clean

Good choices: Linoleum, sheet vinyl, engineered wood, ceramic tile

Linoleum, once a very popular choice in kitchens 50+ years ago, is making a comeback in a big way. It’s no wonder considering it’s environmentally friendly, inexpensive, easy to clean and maintain. That’s everything you could possibly want out of a kitchen floor!

Sheet vinyl is another good choice for kitchens. Since it comes in 12-foot-wide widths, it makes for an easy DIY project. Perhaps just as important, sheet vinyl gives slightly and cushions your step. That’s a huge plus with all the hours spent standing to prep and cook food.

Choosing engineered wood will bring the warmth and character of natural wood to the kitchen, while being able to resist moisture. Most engineered wood systems are DIY-friendly.

Last, but certainly not least, you can’t go wrong with choosing ceramic tiles. They offer superior durability, resist most dents and scratches, are easy to maintain and available in a wide variety of options.

Bathroom & Laundry Room

Priorities: Waterproof, slip-resistant (bathroom)

Good Choices: Porcelain or ceramic tile, vinyl (tile, plank or sheet)

Porcelain tile is everything you could want in a bathroom floor – waterproof, stylish, and cost-effective. Whether you choose porcelain or ceramic, the major downside of both is tile can be slippery, but you can get around that with texturing.

With reasonably good aesthetics, supreme practicality and thousands of options to choose from, vinyl is another popular choice for bathroom flooring. Both vinyl tiles and luxury vinyl planks are very easy to install for the do-it-yourselfer. Installing sheet vinyl is trickier and may require a professional.

Living Room & Main Areas

Priorities: Aesthetic appeal, easy to maintain, durability

Good Choices: Hardwoods (living room), laminate (main areas)

The best place to put hardwoods is in a living room. It looks good and is stylish – not to mention really helps with resale value! Since it is not as high-traffic area such as a foyer, the wood usually remains protected.

For foyers and other main areas, these floors see a lot of foot traffic. Laminate is a great choice for these areas because of its durability.

Bedrooms

Priorities: Comfort, warmth

Good Choices: Carpet, hardwoods, cork

We’ve saved bedrooms for last because it’s a tough one to make a recommendation on, as it really comes down to personal preference. Some people prefer the feel of soft carpet under their bare when they get out of bed. Carpet also gives bedrooms a cozier look. Others prefer hardwood flooring, since it is attractive, durable and can even reduce allergies.

Cork flooring is also a great option for the bedroom; it is a good insulator, soft and absorbs sounds. Cork is a natural material, so it’s environmentally friendly. too Since it’s antimicrobial and resistant to mold, it’s safe for the family!

If you’re thinking about replacing the flooring in your home, tell us whether you would use one of our recommendations or if you have another choice to share.
