Most of us aren’t lucky enough to have a spacious laundry room with tons of storage. It’s much more likely to be a small room in the basement or a nook tucked away in a mud room.
No matter how small the space is, it’s important to keep your laundry room organized. Following these five tips will make more efficient use of your space, and maybe even make the tedious task of doing the laundry a little less daunting.
Tip #1: If you don’t need it, toss it
Start by looking around at what should be thrown away. Throw away or recycle broken hangers, empty detergent containers, broken laundry baskets and anything else that should be in the trash. If there’s room for it, add a trash can to your laundry area. That way you can easily dispose of lint, receipts, wrappers and other trash items found when checking the pockets of dirty clothes.
Tip #2: Create more storage space
Are your washer and dryer stuffed into a closet or a small nook? Use the space in between them for a skinny rolling cart. Alternatively, install a shelf that fits just above the washer and dryer.
The space behind a door is a storage gold mine. You can easily build a set of inexpensive shallow shelves and mount it to the wall behind your laundry room door. The door itself can also be used for storage. All you need is a set of hooks attached to the back of a door to hang your ironing board when it’s not in use.
Tip #3: Create space for drying clothes
Vertical space is often overlooked when it comes to the laundry room. Install a retractable clothesline or buy an inexpensive freestanding drying rack. Whether you mainly air dry your clothes or just need a place to hang up shirts when they come out of the dryer, having a rod available for hanging clothes is always a good idea.
Tip #4: Add hampers for presorting dirty clothes
Cut down on laundry time with hampers for presorting clothes. If you have the space, add three laundry hampers; one for whites, lights and darks. If possible, make each family member responsible for putting their dirty clothes in the appropriate hamper, so you have one less laundry chore to worry about!
If you feel like channeling your inner Martha Stewart, use colour-coded baskets or labels so there’s no chance of mistakenly putting darks in the whites hamper.
Tip #5: Make sure everything has a home
Add a small container near the washer to store random items found in pockets (e.g., loose change) that can be returned to their rightful owner later. Keep another basket or bin handy for stray socks. By logically deciding where things will go (at least at least until they're returned to their proper home), you'll have more success with organization in the long run.
